ABOUT LYH

Only Lynchburg Regional Airport brings you directly into Region 2000, a 2000-square-mile district in the heart of Virginia. The airport’s proximity to three major highways, US 29, US 501, and US 460, provides ready access to destinations throughout the region — from business complexes to scenic and historic attractions.

With up to 14 daily arriving and departing flights, Lynchburg Regional Airport provides a variety of flight times for all passengers. Regional carrier service is provided by American Eagle Airlines through Charlotte Douglas International Airport, whose affiliation with a major flagship airline means easy connection and ticketing — no matter where you’re headed!

Lynchburg Regional Airport (LYH), established in 1931, was originally known as Preston Glenn Airport, named in honor of Lt. Preston Glenn, a Lynchburg native who died in service as an Army Air Corps pilot during World War I. In 1992, the airport’s new terminal facility opened for business. Lynchburg Regional Airport/Preston Glenn Field, located at the intersection of Route 29 South and Route 460, is owned by the City of Lynchburg.

Lynchburg Regional Airport is playing a key role in the region’s growth, serving as a convenient global gateway for the area’s international corporations, manufacturing plants, research and development firms, colleges, and universities.

CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS

Runway 4-22 Rehabilitation Project

Keeping Lynchburg Regional Airport Safe & Efficient

Lynchburg Regional Airport (LYH) is committed to ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient air service for our community. As part of this commitment, we are undertaking a vital rehabilitation project for Runway 4-22, our primary runway for air carrier operations. This project is crucial to maintaining the safety and efficiency of the airport, improving the flying experience for passengers, and supporting airline needs.

Runway 4-22, measuring 7,100 feet by 150 feet, is essential for daily commercial flight operations at LYH. Over time, runways, like roads, require periodic maintenance, including asphalt replacement. However, unlike roads, a runway must be fully closed for repairs. The rehabilitation includes full-length pavement repairs, grade corrections to smooth the runway, and an upgrade to the lighting system with new, brighter, and more energy-efficient LED lights. These improvements will extend the runway’s lifespan, enhance safety for pilots, and improve operational efficiency at the airport.

This project is funded through the Airport Improvement Program (AIP), a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) initiative that helps support infrastructure upgrades at airports across the country. The AIP ensures that airports like LYH remain safe and efficient, supporting both local air travel and economic growth.

For more details about the AIP, visit the FAA’s Airport Improvement Program page.

While we strive to minimize disruptions, there will be temporary flight schedule adjustments to accommodate construction work. To reduce the impact on daily flights, much of the rehabilitation work will occur during night hours and extended weekends.

Construction Schedule:

  • Fall Phase: October 1 – October 31, 2025

Flight Schedule Adjustments:

  • Weekdays: Flights will operate up to 12:00 AM (midnight) and after 6:00 AM
  • Weekends:
